Starworks Motorsport will run two cars full-time in the Prototype Challenge class this season. However, the driver lineups are “a bit” complicated, but they have hired some spectacular talent!
Team veterans, Renger van der Zande and Alex Popow will drive the Number 8 Oreca FLM09 for the entire season. IndyCar driver, Jack Hawksworth and Chris Cumming will join them for the Rolex 24 at Daytona while David Heinemeier Hansson will be a part of the lineup for Sebring and Petit Le Mans.
Renger van der Zande said, “I am delighted to go racing again under the Starworks banner. I have built a great relationship with Peter and the whole crew. I feel that the last two seasons flew by and we are ready for a lot of success together in 2016. The Daytona 24 Hour lineup is very solid and all the drivers seem in line with the same approach to attack this amazing event. To be racing together with Alex for the rest of the season is making me very excited as well. The races that I raced with Alex were a win or a podium so that is a good track record to keep up.”
It is great to hear that the “Flying Dutchman” will return to the team once again. He has to be one of the best LMPC drivers in the world. Having him back for another season is definitely going to help the team.
Starworks Motorsport’s lineup for the Number 88 Oreca FLM09 will look vastly different as Mark Kvamme will be the only full-time driver. He will be joined in the Rolex 24 at Daytona with drivers, Sean Johnston, Marco Engel, and Felix Rosenqvist. Kvamme, Johnson, and Engel will be competing for the North American Endurance Cup together while young driver Ashley Freiberg will drive in the sprint races.
Kvamme said, “I am honored and a bit nervous to be on such a fabulous team so early in my racing career. Peter has assembled a group of professionals that are focused on one thing and one thing only – winning!”
Mark Kvamme should not be nervous to be on such a successful team. This is a great team to learn from and I predict that Mark will fight for the title in Prototype Challenge. It will also be interesting to see Ashley Freiberg run the “entire season.” As stated above, she will run all sprint rounds with Kvamme. However, she will drive with Turner Motorsport in GT Daytona for the North American Endurance Cup rounds. It is fantastic that Freiberg will get a full season of action in the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship.
Freiberg said, “I am thrilled to be able to drive with Mark Kvamme in the Starworks PC car for the sprint races this year! I had spent time with Mark last summer while he was racing in Ferrari Challenge, and I think he will surprise some people this season! To also be a part of a team as top-notch as Starworks is very exciting to me and I look forward to working with everyone this year!”
I want to wish Mr. Peter Baron and his entire Starworks Motorsport team a successful 2016 season as they chase down the title in Prototype Challenge!
